After roaring successes during its Halloween Horror Nights, Universal Studios has announced plans for The Walking Dead to become a permanent fixture at its Hollywood park as a new year-round attraction based on the hit AMC series.
Following the latest episode of The Walking Dead on 13 March, fan TV show The Talking Dead unveiled the plans for the attraction, which will launch in Q3 of this year.
Expanding on the concept of a zombie horror maze, the new attraction will be of a similar disposition, with visitors walking through rather than riding on a vehicle.
Universal has brought in The Walking Dead’s executive producer and director Greg Nicotero for the project, along with his special effects company KNB Efx. Nicotero and his team will be creating various prosthetics, using original moulds from the series, to create walkers exactly as they are seen in the show.
Universal said in a statement that the attractions would offer a “no-holds-barred experience that significantly intensifies any other iteration previously developed within the theme park.”
In addition to authentic walker make-up effects on real-life actors, the attraction will include animatronic walkers, detailed set design and costuming, and props seen in the series.
“The attraction will deliver an uncompromised realistic environment that brings guests even further into the most watched show in cable television history,” said Universal.
