SeaWorld San Diego is preparing to launch one of its biggest attractions, as it will open the Journey to Atlantis on 29 May.
The multi-million dollar attraction will be based on the mythical island nation of and will feature a thrill ride and a 130,000-gallon dolphin exhibit.
Dennis Burks, general manager, said: “Journey to Atlantis provides both an adventure and a personal connection with marine life.
“We are pleased this new attraction not only re-energizes the park with a new ride, but also features a face-to-face encounter with the rare Commerson’s dolphins.”
Visitors to the six-minute ride will board vessels made to look like Greek fishing boats and experience simulated earthquakes, floods, projected lights and water cannons, before plunging 60ft into a lake below.
After the journey, guests will be able to observe the protected and rare Commerson’s dolphins through an underwater, 36ft-viewing window.
Building work on the five-acre Atlantis area begun in November 2002 and finishes just in time to open the new summer season.
The 189.5-acre SeaWorld San Diego opened in 1964 and has hosted more than 100 million guests during its 40-year existence. Details: www.seaworld.com
