The world's largest medical research charity, the Wellcome Trust is reported to be in negotiations to buy the Millennium Dome. The trust, which is worth £15bn and spends up to £600m a year on medical research, could turn the Dome into a £300m biomedical science research centre. Although Wellcome has not commented on the reports, it is well-positioned to take the Dome off the government's hands in its commitment to spend £3bn on science research - some 20 per cent of it in the UK.
