Merlin unveils record-breaking Hyperia coaster at Thorpe Park

Merlin Entertainments has unveiled its latest ride
Hyperia at Thorpe Park is the tallest, fastest and 'most weightless' in the UK
The ride has been developed to celebrate 45 years of Thorpe Park
Mack Rides worked with Merlin Magic Making to deliver the new attraction
Merlin Entertainments has launched its new Hyperia rollercoaster at Thorpe Park to celebrate its 45th year.

The ride is billed as the UK's tallest, fastest and most weightless rollercoaster, beating The Big One in Blackpool for height by 13ft and at 81 mph, besting Thorpe Park's Stealth coaster for speed. It has two 20-passenger trains.

Designed in-house by Merlin Magic Making – led by global creative director, Megan Wastell – and built by Mack Rides, Hyperia stands 236ft tall and has three inversions, including a dive loop and an 'Immelmann' – a climb followed by a half loop then a half roll in the opposite direction.

The storytelling evokes Hyperia, the daughter of an ancient river god whose fear of water traps her on an island.

To escape, she makes metal wings and launches herself from the highest mountain.

The new ride has wings as its logo in recognition.

"Hyperia combines epic storytelling and exhilarating thrills," said Wastell. "This groundbreaking ride showcases our commitment to creating unforgettable memories through the magic of immersive storytelling and cutting-edge innovation, solidifying our place as the world leader in branded entertainment destinations."

Hyperia replaces two existing rides – Loggers Leap and the Rocky Express.

The name of the ride went through several iterations and at one stage, Merlin is thought to have considered calling it Icarus after the story in Greek mythology of the man who flew too close to the sun with wings of wax and feathers only for them to melt and send him crashing to earth.

The story of Hyperia was ultimately chosen as being more appropriate and was formally announced on 5 October 2023, along with a slogan 'find your fearless'.

The groundworks for Hyperia were delivered by construction company B&E who also did the steelwork.

Merlin has extended the Hyperia brand into its accommodation offering, with themed rooms at the Thorpe Shark Cabins now available and bundled with Hyperia Fastrack access.
