Google Arts & Culture has created a new online collection of immersive 3D digital imagery that shines a light on the effects of climate change on five heritage landmarks around the world.
The Heritage on the Edge project saw Google work with the International Council on Monuments and Sites and 3D scanning company CyArk, which collected data on sites in Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Tanzania (Kilwa Kisiwani), Scotland (Old and New Towns of Edinburgh), Bangladesh (Mosque City of Bagerhat), and Peru (Ancient City of Chan Chan).
Data was captured by CyArk through photogrammetry, 3D scanning, drone video capture and interviews with local experts.
More than 50 online exhibitions, two augmented reality "pocket galleries" and 25 detailed 3D models have been produced through the project, freely available to all on the Google Cloud Platform. Heritage on the Edge combines 3D models, immersive Street View tours, AR and hours of video content into a "compelling and moving story of climate change".
The project partners also conducted local training programmes to assess site vulnerabilities and support heritage managers with on-site conservation.
Google has created a virtual reality tour of the Palace of Versailles, allowing people to
explore the architecture, artworks and history of the former home of French royalty
wherever they are in the world.
A Google Lens integration between the de Young museum in San Francisco and the Google
Arts & Culture team has gone live, providing an alternative guided tour of the museum via
smartphone.
Google Arts and Culture has launched a massive online science museum platform with a number of
museums, curators and archivists in 23 countries around the world.
Numbers from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, (ALVA) show that Royal attractions
saw a huge increase in visitor numbers during 2023 – the coronation year of King Charles III.
Off the back of the success of the first round of Everyday Heritage Grants in 2022, Historic
England is funding 56 creative projects that honour the heritage of working-class England.
Universal has revealed it will be adding new Harry Potter attractions, alongside Super Nintendo
and How to Train Your Dragon worlds to its Florida resort.
Cruise Ship Interiors (CSI) invites cruise lines, shipyards, design studios, outfitters,
and suppliers to take part in CSI Design Expo Americas in Miami, Florida, the region’s only
event dedicated to cruise ship interior design. [more...]
