Somerset’s Taunton Castle in the town’s new cultural quarter is to be restored and improved to accommodate a new Museum of Somerset in a bid to boost visitor numbers to the heritage attraction.
The £6.5m renovation scheme will create a new entrance, reception and shop at the castle, while improvements will be made to the historic Great Hall, Wyndham Gallery and the east and west passages leading from the existing reception area.
The new museum will tell the story of Somerset’s past, present and future, using a storyline divided into three broad themes – Birth & Infancy, Youth and Maturity – alongside displays featuring stories on the history of Taunton Castle itself and the military.
Justin Robinson, at the council’s community services, said: “We want to provide innovative and exciting ways to tell Somerset’s story. Through the Museum of Somerset project, there is huge potential to create a quality learning experience that is accessible, relevant and inspiring for all, including those who may never have considered finding out about our heritage.”
Somerset County Council is submitting a planning application to Taunton Deane Borough Council, following news of a £4.8m investment secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The proposals are part of a wider Project Taunton scheme, designed by architects LDA Design. Exhibition designers Event Communications will create the museum displays.
