Revamped post-war art museum to reopen in Maryland next month
POSTED 20 Sep 2018 . BY Luke Cloherty
The Pavilions comprises 13 connected gallery rooms for single-artist installations and is anchored by an 18,000-square-foot water court
American billionaires Mitchell and Emily Wei Rales are to reopen the Glenstone Museum, showcasing their extensive collection of post-war art, in Maryland, US next month following renovations and an expansion.

The museum, located on the grounds of a former hunt club near Washington DC in Potomac, has undergone a serious overhaul. The attraction now boasts additional exhibition space, two cafés, a bookstore and a total of 230 acres of landscaped meadows, woods and streams created by PWP Landscape Architecture.

A new 204,000sq ft (19,000sq m) structure, called the Pavilions, has been designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners.

The Pavilions comprises 13 connected gallery rooms for single-artist installations, with the development anchored by an 18,000sq ft (1,700sq m) water court.

Rooms within the new building will feature single-artist installations and changing exhibitions from artists such as Michael Heizer, Charles Ray, Lygia Pape, On Kawara, Roni Horn, Brice Marden and Cy Twombly.

"We look forward to welcoming visitors soon to our fully realised vision of art, architecture, and landscape combined in a single experience," said Emily Wei Rales.

Some controversy has surrounded the renovation work, as Hitt Contracting, the firm which oversaw the build, has sued the foundation that runs the institution, seeking at least US$24m (€20.4m, £18.1m) in damages.
