District council approves £14.5m leisure centre plans
POSTED 18 Nov 2016 . BY Deven Pamben
Council plans for Newbold Comyn
Councillors at Warwick District Council have agreed plans to invest £14.5million on revamping two of its leisure centres.

The cash, which includes £2m from Sport England, will be invested in Newbold Comyn and St Nicholas Park leisure centres.

Improvements to both facilities include extended and refurbished health and fitness facilities, improved entrance and reception areas, revamped cycle storage and energy efficient lighting and heating.

The Newbold Comyn centre, in Leamington, will have a 100-station gym and two studios plus a spin studio, as well as a four-court badminton sports hall and a climbing wall for youngsters.

The St Nicholas Park facility, in Warwick, will have an 80-station gym and two studios plus a dedicated spin studio.

Building contractors Speller Metcalfe will start work next month at St Nicholas Park, with the site expected to remain closed until November 2017.

Work at Newbold Comyn will begin in January. The facility will be closed for about 22 weeks until June. The centre will then reopen but the whole site will not be fully completed until November 2017.

The council expects to appoint an external contractor to manage its leisure facilities early next year following a tender process. Seven companies were invited to tender and four submissions were received before the deadline. The proposed management contract will start in June.
