Denmark's House of Culture to open in 2016
POSTED 02 Sep 2014 . BY Katie Buckley

Work has started on Copenhagen’s House of Culture and Movement (Ku.Be.) in Denmark, aimed at engaging the local population in a healthy and active lifestyle.

Set to become a new major attraction in the Frederiksberg district, Ku.Be. will feature a range of facilities mixing the function of a community centre with exhibition and performance spaces, as well as a playground, park and health centre.

Masterminded by ADEPT, a Danish architecture firm, and Dutch based MVRDV, the building is spread over 4,000 sq m (13,123 sq ft) and has an accompanying 4,500 sq m (14,763 sq ft) of public space.

The Ku.Be will have an impressive entrance hall and public atrium

Three separate buildings will be constructed on the site to provide space for the planned facilities. The first, the Ku.Be. building itself, will be a rectangular glass cube, containing six different elements which can be used for contrasting activities. The permanent spaces have specific uses: a theatre, a health zone, a food zone, zen area, study centre and exhibition hall, fitness and activity centre, wellness centre and an area for the administration.

There will be recreational areas for children and adults alike

There is also an option to open one side of the building, bringing the outside in, to create an outdoor theatre space with landscaping by SLA landscape architects who have planned the rest of the public space and grounds for the site.

Over the next year and a half building work will continue. Following the completion of the initial stage, now underway, the €17m ($22.3m, £13.4m) project is hoped to be inaugurated in mid 2016.
