Museums Galleries Scotland allocates £500,000 in capital funding

Twenty-four successful applicants have been announced by Museums Galleries Scotland to receive a share of its £500,000 Capital Fund programme.

The government-funded grants of up to £40,000 each will be used for projects such as re-thatching the roof on the Glencoe Museum and installing solar panels at Historylinks Museum in Dornoch.

Glasgow Museums will use a £28,000 grant to purchase bespoke storage for their collection of Dutch and French pastels.

Chair of Museum Galleries Scotland Douglas Connell said: "It is particularly pleasing to see the grants benefiting such a wide geographical spread of museums across the country."

He said MGS experienced huge demand from the sector this year and additional help from the government allowed it to increase support for projects.

Other recipients include: Grampian Transport Museum, Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum; Glencoe and North Lorn Folk Museum; Helmsdale Heritage Society; High Life Highland; McLean Museum; and the Elgin Museum.

Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop said: "My decision to allocate £100,000 to the MGS Capital Fund this year means we will be able to do more to preserve and enhance these important collections, boosting the Scottish economy and bringing social and community benefits across Scotland."
