Hadrian's Wall is to receive more than £7m over the next six years to create world-class visitor facilities. The news came at the launch of a revised Management Plan for the World Heritage Site, which runs from 2002 to 2007.
The funding will be used for the conservation of Housesteads Roman Fort - Britain's most complete Roman fort - as well as Chester's Roman Fort and the creation of a new youth hostel and visitor centre in the Northumberland National Park at Once Brewed.
A key focus of the plan is to encourage sustainable access to and within the site by encouraging visitors not to use cars. A footpath running the length of the wall opens in May 2003. Details: www.hadrians-wall.org
