The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has named 25 new properties as World Heritage Sites.

The new sites were picked from an original list of 35 nominees during the World Heritage Convention (WHC) session held this week at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

Among the new sites are Wadi Rum Protected Area in Jordan; Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison in Barbados; Fort Jesus in Mombasa, Kenya; and Selimiye Mosque Social Complex at Edirne, Turkey.

Among the 25 additions were three natural properties, 21 cultural and one mixed site. The World Heritage List now numbers 936 properties: 183 natural sites; 725 cultural; and 28 mixed.

The news was welcomed by country delegates and state officials - including Jordan's Queen Rania who expressed her excitement by tweeting to her followers on the micro-blogging site Twitter: "So proud Wadi Rum has join Unesco World Heritage List! That tallies Jordan's total of World Heritage sites to 4!"
