A new report commissioned by the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) has been published in order to examine the impact of schemes funded by the Millennium Commission in the UK.

Millennium Now has been produced a decade on from the launch of many projects, which include Cardiff's Millennium Stadium; the Eden Project; and Tate Modern.

More than 200 individual schemes received a share of £1.3bn of National Lottery funding, which also included the UK's largest land reclamation project - Millennium Coastal Park.

BIG, which took over the responsibilities of the Millennium Commission in 2006, ordered the report to review the projects' legacy and to see whether similar plans should be backed.

"The Commission had a specific aim - to fund projects to celebrate the end of the second millennium and welcome the start of the third," said BIG chief executive Peter Wanless.

"Now we want to explore how BIG can build on the Millennium Commission's legacy."

Mike O'Connor, former chief executive of the Millennium Commission, added: "A few projects went belly up but if we had made no mistakes it would have meant we had not taken enough risks.

"Taking risks with public money is not the normal way to operate but the result is that we still benefit from treasures such as the Eden Project, Tate Modern the Millennium Stadium and the once wobbly but always wonderful Millennium Bridge."
