London museum unveils revamp proposals
POSTED 04 Mar 2011 . BY Pete Hayman
Jun Aoki and Associates' vision for the Exhibition Road scheme
Seven shortlisted design proposals for the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum's Exhibition Road project have gone on display at the attraction's Sackler Centre.

The scheme will lead to the creation of a new purpose-built gallery for the museum to host a programme of temporary exhibitions, as well as a public courtyard and a new entrance.

Amanda Levete Architects, Tony Fretton Architects and Jamie Fobert Architects - all based in London - are among the seven design firms to be shortlisted.

Heneghan.peng (Dublin, Ireland); Jun Aoki and Associates (Tokyo, Japan); Michael Maltzan Architecture (New York, US); and Snøhetta and Hoskins (Oslo, Norway, and Glasgow) have also been shortlisted.

The seven firms were shortlisted following an international design contest, with a jury chaired by V&A trustee Steve McGuckin behind the selections.

Existing projects devised by the seven shortlisted architects will now be visited by the jury in a bid to help guide the final decision, which is expected to be made by the end of the month.

McGuckin said: "The shortlisted teams have all come up with highly creative and well thought through design solutions for this complex V&A site.

"Choosing a winning team to lead the Exhibition Road Project will not be an easy decision for the jury."
