Specialist engineers from Gifford of Southampton have conducted an initial examination of Hastings Pier following the fire on 5 October.

The company said it still had 'extreme public safety concerns' around the pier for beach users, noting that even six days after the fire, debris was still continuing to fall from the structure onto the beach below.

The examination indicated no significant further damage to the main structure of the pier under the apron and central sections - the part of the pier closest to the seafront.

Beyond that, concerns remain about the structural integrity of the pier, it being still too early to assess whether its condition in the previously identified areas of concern has deteriorated further. In particular, there is said to be a continuing risk of 'progressive collapse' and Hastings Borough Council (HBC) is being advised on how this risk can be reduced.

Jeremy Birch, leader of HBC said: "Clearly public safety is our first concern and we will continue to do all we can to ensure that this is not compromised. Once we have the costs of making the pier safe we can then work with Hastings Pier and White Rock Trust (HPWRT) and possible funders to ensure that we give the pier our very best shot."

Jess Steele, trustee of the HPWRT added: "Clearly the fire last week was a major blow to us. However, the initial investigation by engineers shows that there is still real hope and we will re-double our efforts to ensure that the pier does have a future."

The HPWRT was formed in 2006 following the closure of the pier by HBC, with a view to restoring the structure and bringing it into community ownership. does have a future."
