Welsh deputy first minister Ieuan Wyn Jones has announced that the forthcoming Ryder Cup is to leave a lasting 'infrastructure legacy' for South East Wales.
In preparation for the biennial golf tournament, which is to be held at the Celtic Manor Resort near Newport, millions of pounds have been spent by the Assembly Government to enhance transport links.
More than £9.5m has been invested in Newport's road infrastructure and an additional £3.2m for three park and ride facilities. Newport's railway station has also benefited from a major upgrade.
Jones said: "The arrival of the 2010 Ryder Cup represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to put Wales' firmly on the map and it will be a fantastic opportunity the country will have to showcase itself on the world stage.
"The event has already done wonders for golf in Wales and its impact on tourism and business is already being felt."
