London's Jewish Museum set to reopen
POSTED 16 Mar 2010 . BY Pete Hayman
A London museum dedicated to Jewish culture, heritage and identity in the UK will reopen to the public tomorrow (17 March), following the completion of a major £10m redevelopment.

The Jewish Museum London in Camden Town has been expanded and revamped as part of the scheme, which has involved architects Long and Kentish and exhibition designers Event Communications.

New displays and exhibitions across four permanent galleries aim to provide visitors with the chance to explore Jewish life and culture as part of the wider history of Britain.

Features include the recreation of an East End street and tailor's workshop, a map illustrating where Jews have come from across the world and a number of historic artefacts.

The Welcome Gallery introduces visitors to a range of Jewish people; History: A British Story examines how and why Jewish people settled in the UK; and Judaism: A Living Faith explores the religion.

The final gallery - the Holocaust Gallery - explores the impact of the Nazis through the first-hand experience and personal items of Leon Greenman, a London-born survivor of Auschwitz, as well as other survivors who lived in the UK.

Rickie Burman, director of the Jewish Museum, said; "What it means to be British and the issue of cultural identity has never been more hotly debated. At the new Jewish Museum we explore these issues in the context of one of Britain's oldest immigrant communities.

"We hope our ground-breaking new displays will inspire people to take a stand against racism and build interfaith understanding and connections."

Dame Jenny Abramsky, chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund - which contributed £4.2m towards the scheme, added: "Now housed under one roof, the collections are truly inspirational, bringing together many different stories told in a wonderful range of voices."
