Coventry Transport Museum to unveil £6.9m revamp
POSTED 09 Mar 2006 . BY
Coventry Transport Museum is set to unveil a £6.9m redevelopment and expansion next month which will see the introduction of several new galleries. The project follows a previous £7.5m redevelopment just two years ago.

The new scheme has involved the creation of a new Motorcycle Gallery – designed by Richard Fowler Associates – a refurbished Landmarques Gallery – exploring Coventry’s transport industry between 1869-1948 – and a new Commercial Vehicle Gallery.

It has also included the development of a new education suite – with rooms for wet and dry activities – and ‘technocentre’ offering computer access and AV facilities.

A new archive and library resource centre will allow the public access to the museum’s archives on an appointment basis.

“We are all extremely excited about the completion of our redevelopment,” said Barry Littlewood, chief executive.

“The museum has changed beyond all recognition over the last 25 years and this latest extension and series of new galleries reinforces our dedication to providing dynamic and inspiring exhibitions as a testament to the innovative spirit of the people of Coventry.

“The museum is one of the most visited attractions in the region and we are confident that both our old friends and new visitors alike will delight in these new additions.”

The council provided £6.2m, while additional funding came from the European Regional Development Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Museum Designation Challenge Fund, the DCMS Wolfson Foundation and the British Motorcycle Trust.

Later this year, the museum also plans to add a new museum café and a Model World Gallery dedicated to a die cast model collection. Details: www.transport-museum.com
