Historic Welsh buildings in funding boost
POSTED 14 Jan 2009 . BY Pete Hayman
Nine of Wales' most important historic buildings are to share a £385,000 funding package from the Welsh Assembly Government.

Heritage minister Alun Ffred Jones announced that grants will be awarded to sites across the country in order for essential repairs and restoration work to be carried out.

The former British Steel offices at Ebbw Vale, Blaenau Gwent, will receive the highest award of £100,000, which will go towards the second phase of a project to transform the Grade II*-listed property into a new visitor attraction.

Treberfydd, an early Tudor revival house located near Brecon, Powys, has been given more than £29,000 to repair the building's roof, windows and chimneys, while £7,500 has been earmarked for a scheme in Pembroke to repoint and rebuild the town's South Quay Wall.

A scheme of works to improve the appearance of a piece of land at the grade II*-listed Foley House in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire has been offered £75,000, as has a project to conserve and repair the Transporter Bridge in Newport.

Elsewhere, Bethesda Welsh Congregational Chapel in Llangennech, Carmarthenshire, was awarded nearly £15,000 for roof repairs and new doors, £42,500 was handed to the Record Office in Hawarden, Flintshire, and £11,250 will go towards the repair of a 19th century workingmen's club in Tenby, Pembrokeshire.

Jones said: "The grant offers are for a wide range of historic buildings across Wales, including many important aspects of our industrial heritage, and will ensure that some of our most important buildings are maintained for the enjoyment of future generations."

The appointment of two new members to the Historic Buildings Advisory Council for Wales has also been announced, with Julian Orbach and Michael Garner set to join the Welsh Assembly Government's advisory group on the country's historic buildings.
