Aberdeen is aiming to become the “most active city in Scotland”, with key stakeholders launching an ambitious participation drive.

The initiative was revealed in the annual report of Sport Aberdeen – one of the stakeholders within the Active Aberdeen Partnership.

Initiatives and events will be established by the group – which also includes Aberdeen Football Club, Aberdeen Sports Village and sportscotland, among others – to boost participation as part of an investment scheme.

Sport Aberdeen has made the pledge to earmark £1.8m (US$2.3m, €2.1m) to upgrade two of its sport and leisure facilities as part of an “ongoing programme of modernisation” within the city’s Sports Facilities Strategy 2016-2026.

According to the Sport Aberdeen’s report, the organisation experienced a 13 per cent increase in fitness memberships, while 51,497 people of the city’s 196,000 population used its football and cricket pitches.

Customer visits overall to indoor and outdoor sport venues increased by 4.6 per cent to 1.3m.

This year, Sport Aberdeen also announced a “multi-million pound partnership” with operator Pulse Fitness which created the finance for the facilities programme.
