SelgasCano unveil colourful design for Serpentine Pavilion
POSTED 25 Mar 2015 . BY Katie Buckley
SelgasCano's pavilion will be a colourful explosion in the heart of the the Royal Park Credit: SelgasCano
Madrid-based SelgasCano architects have unveiled their designs for this year's Serpentine Pavilion in London, featuring an explosion of colour.

To be constructed from ETFE, translucent fluorine-based plastic, the lightweight structure will be double-skinned, consisting of multi-coloured panels wrapped in webbing. Internally, the experience will be like passing under sheets of stained glass.

When describing their design in a company statement, SelgasCano said they wanted to explore ways a visitor could be at one with their surroundings in the Royal Park in London.

“We sought a way to allows the public to experience architecture through simple elements: structure, light, transparency, shadows, lightness, form, sensitivity, change, surprise, colour and materials," the statement said. "We have therefore designed a Pavilion which incorporates all of these elements.”

At the heart of the pavilion will be a cafe for the public to enjoy. The Serpentine’s director, Julia Peyton-Jones commented: “SelgasCano’s structure will be an extraordinarily chrysalis-like structure, as organic as the surrounding gardens. It will be a place for people to meet, to have coffee and to experience throughout the summer.”

The Serpentine Pavilion project has been running since 2000 and is now on its 15th year. Sponsored by AECOM and Goldman Sachs, the pavilion will be open to the public on-site for four months throughout the summer. Each year, the Pavilion becomes one of the top-ten most visited architectural and design exhibitions in the world.
