Universal Orlando trials metal detectors to improve ride safety

Universal Orlando has started using metal detectors for rollercoaster riders in an attempt to ensure safety, according to park officials.

The park has installed a metal detector on a trial basis on its Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit coaster. The aim of the detectors would be to remove things such as coins, which can potentially fly out and hit riders or onlookers while under extreme forces.

The trial run will see passengers scanned with a metal wand should the detector go off, to determine what triggered the alarm. Guests can then safely store their keys, phones and change – items prohibited by the park while on rides – as well as anything else they may have on their person. If someone refuses to pass through the metal detector, Universal says they risk being removed from the park.

The test will see if the detectors cause a significant change in wait time, something the park wants to avoid. Should the trial go smoothly, Universal is planning to roll out the detectors to all of its coaster rides.
