Universal Studios Hollywood reveals behind the scenes footage for Fast & Furious attraction and sets opening date

Universal Studios Hollywood has showcased behind-the-scenes footage of the upcoming Fast & Furious addition to its studio tour, also announcing an opening date of 25 June.

The behind-the-scenes video includes the franchise’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson all talking about what the attraction will bring, with added footage of what went into filming the never-before-seen extravaganza.

“I get the chance to become Luke Hobbs and kick ass,” said The Rock. “And it’s all in 3D.”

“This is going to be super special,” added Rodriguez. “[Visitors] are going to have the heat of fire flying at you. It’s really a sensory-driven experience.”

The special footage debuted during the NBC special broadcast of Fast Five on 21 March. When on the ride, visitors will feel as though they are going at speeds of up to 120mph. The hydraulic motion-based ride uses 3D audio and HD 3D imagery to project on what Universal says is the longest and most expansive 360-degree screen anywhere in the world. Measuring 400ft (122m) in length, the 65,000sq ft (6,000sq m) structure makes use of 34, 4K projectors configured to envelop guests in a hyper-realistic scene.

Additional exclusive content – filmed with the cast members in 2014 – will be featured on the tram ride’s monitors, highlighting interactions as they engage guests along the tour. En route to the ride, numerous prop cars from the Fast & Furious series, including Dom's iconic Dodge Charger, will be on show.

While Universal has not commented on the cost of the attraction, AM2 understands it will rely on similar technology to the previous King Kong version, which cost around US$100m (€88m, £65m) when it opened in 2010. Universal Studios’ Hollywood Studio Tour is undergoing a major revamp, with additional plans to include refurbished tram vehicles, a night-time tour and the Fast & Furious tour finale.
