Tokyo Disney Resort plans ¥250bn expansion in bid to draw more visitors
POSTED 07 Jul 2016 . BY Tom Anstey
An estimated 30 million people visited Tokyo Disney Resort in 2015
Kyoichiro Uenishi, president of Tokyo Disney Resort operator Oriental Land Co, has said the company is planning to introduce a raft of premier new attractions as it aims to increase annual visitor numbers by 10 per cent over the next decade.

Speaking to Japanese newspaper The Yomiuri Shimbun, Uenishi said the park would be introducing a new area inspired by Beauty and the Beast, while Tokyo DisneySea is looking at creating a Frozen-themed area, first touted in April last year.

Also aiming to reduce overcrowding, Disney will expand the size of its theme parks, using surrounding lands to offer increased capacity and eased congestion. Attractions currently failing to draw large crowds will also be repurposed to even flow around the park.

According to Uenishi, ¥250bn (US$2.48bn, €2.2bn, £1.9bn) will be invested into Disney’s Tokyo properties over the course of the next five years, with the Beauty and the Beast attraction coming in Q1 2020 and the Frozen expansion coming in 2021 or later. An Alice in Wonderland attraction had also been touted in 2015, but that appears to have been scrapped.

An estimated 30 million people visited Tokyo Disney Resort in 2015. Following development, it is hoped those number will reach around 33 million.
