Scottish Ballet to gain new premises
POSTED 07 Nov 2006 . BY Helen Patenall
Scottish Ballet will be re-homed in a new £11m multi-arts production and presentation centre at the Tramway arts venue in central Glasgow.

The Scottish dance company’s new premises – designed by Malcolm Fraser Architects – will comprise three large rehearsal studios as well as health and fitness areas.

In addition, there will be space for maintenance, preparation and storage of sets and lighting equipment as well as wardrobe and administration areas.

The ballet company proposes to partner and support the wider dance community by providing dance studios for independent dance groups as well as a dedicated education studio.

The project has already secured more than £7.5m towards the projected cost, which includes £2m from the Scottish Executive, a £3.75m National Lottery grant approved by the Scottish Arts Council and funding from Scottish Enterprise Glasgow and Glasgow City Council.

It is anticipated that the balance will be raised through the sale of the dance company’s existing premises – a former army drill hall in the west end of Glasgow – and a capital appeal.

Cindy Sughrue, executive producer of Scottish Ballet, said: “We are very excited about the potential for the future, as the bespoke building will create a platform from which Scottish Ballet can fulfil its potential in so many different ways.

“Tramway is a leading arts venue in Glasgow’s inner city and placing a large-scale producing company within a dynamic international arts centre and community resource will create a range of opportunities.”

Iain Munro, Scottish Arts Council, added: “We believe that this new facility will not only provide an appropriate home for one of Scotland’s national companies but also increase the opportunities for Scottish Ballet to expand and develop their practice in both professional dance and outreach and education work.” Details: www.scottisharts.org.uk
