Blackpool has been chosen to pilot a government initiative to drive up standards in the tourism and hospitality industries.
The joint initiative developed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Local Government Association is targeted at hotels and guesthouses to give visitors a firmer assurance of minimum legal and safety standards.
Councillor Eddie Collett, deputy leader of Blackpool Borough Council, said he is delighted that Blackpool is at the forefront of piloting this initiative: “Hoteliers have nothing to fear, apart from those properties which are grossly unsatisfactory.
“Indeed, by being involved they can only benefit from the guidance of the independent consultants which the council is funding.”
The initiative is targeted at hotels, guest houses and B&Bs which are failing to meet minimum legal requirements on health and safety, food hygiene, trading standards and fire safety in order to help them improve.
Local authorities in Blackpool, Bournemouth, Camden, Canterbury, Greenwich and West Sussex are testing out the model until the autumn. Details: www.blackpooltourism.com
