Adjaye Associates win contract to design Florida library and cultural centre
POSTED 08 May 2017 . BY Kim Megson
Adjaye Associates, led by Sir David Adjaye, have received acclaim for their innovative approach to civic and library design Credit: Adjaye Associates
The architecture practice of Sir David Adjaye will lead the design of a major library and events centre in the city of Winter Park, Florida.

Adjaye Associates have been hired by the Winter Park City Commission to work alongside HuntonBrady Architects on the project, which will be located in the northwest corner of the city’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.

The building will be the new home of the Winter Park Public Library, which has occupied its current premises on East New England Avenue for over 35 years. The new facility will be designed as a large-scale community hub, hosting cultural and educational events and acting as an incubator for local businesses. It will also feature workshop spaces and a history centre.

Adjaye – who was knighted in January and named among TIME magazine’s 2017 list of the world’s 100 most influential people last month – has previously designed two neighbourhood libraries in Washington D.C. and the award-winning Idea Stores civic building in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

The firm's largest project to date, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African-American History & Culture, opened on the National Mall in Washington D.C. in September 2016.

Commenting on the latest project, Adjaye said: “Winter Park’s vision for this project truly embraces the continued evolution of the library in the 21st century. With a diverse program that recognises it as a critical piece of cultural infrastructure, this will be a dynamic space for shared education, recreation and interaction.

“I’m thrilled to be working with the city on a design that I hope can become a true beacon for its neighbourhood, with resonance for the entire community.”

Winter Park Public Library executive director Shawn Shaffer added: “This is the true beginning to our next chapter. With the team’s incredible talents at work, we are confident that the new library and events center will be one of Winter Park’s premier locations for education, business support, and community collaboration.”
