Phase two of LA Live destination complete
POSTED 15 Dec 2008 . BY Caroline Wilkinson
The second phase of the £2.5bn L.A Live mixed-use development in California, US, has opened.

The four million sq ft development, constructed on 27 acres in downtown Los Angeles, California, is designed by RTKL architects and is being completed and opened in three phases.

The latest phase includes 12 new restaurants, a 59,000sq ft Club Nokia music venue (2,300-person) and the 15,000sq ft Conga Room dedicated to pan-Latin cuisine and various styles of alternative music, as well asan eight-lane bowling lounge and the Grammy Museum.

The 33,400sq ft museum is a collaboration between The Recording Academy and AEG, and is dedicated to exploring all forms of music and the history of the Grammy awards and includes a 200-seat theatre and a 300-person rooftop events venue. L.A Live is built adjacent to the city's Staple Centre, which recently held the awards ceremony for the eighth time. The museum is expected to attract more than 300,000 people annually.

The ESPN offices and studios will open in early 2009 and, to complete the project, in 2010 the new JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel and The The Ritz-Carlton Residences will open, along with meeting rooms and 140,000sq ft, 14-screen Regal Cinemas.

Built in a 1,101-room tower, designed by architect Gensler, the 878 JW Marriot hotel and the 123-room Ritz-Carlton hotel will be accompanied by a main ballroom, a junior ballroom, meeting and exhibition space.

Last year, the site also saw the opening of a 7,100-seat concert venue, Nokia Theatre, and Nokia Plaza.

Jay Clark, vice president at LA-based RTKL, said: "Mixed-use sports and entertainment districts have been tried in many other parts of the country, although few have met with such resounding success in terms of visits and revenues.

"LA Live will capitalise on and expand what's currently on offer at both the adjacent Los Angeles Convention Center and the Staples center, creating an urban sports and entertainment district that should outshine the others."
