RHA wins master planning commission for Saltcoats complex
POSTED 04 Nov 2008 . BY Luke Tuchscherer
Ray Hole Architects (RHA) has won the commission to be the master planning firm for the Saltcoats Headland Entertainment and Leisure Complex in North Ayrshire, Scotland.

The site in Saltcoats is currently home to the Apollo Entertainment Complex, which overlooks the Isle of Arran. The new centre will be a joint venture between the Apollo’s owners and the Irvine Bay Urban Regeneration Company.

“This project best represents our strengths as a specialist in the leisure, entertainment and cultural attraction sector,” said Ray Hole, managing director. “It will combine tourism strategy, designs for sensitive and extreme environments and deliver an authentic visitor experience through a balance of architecture, content and operational efficiency.

Leisure Opportunities spoke to Jim Graham, one of the directors at the Apollo, who said that the plans could include an indoor play area, an amusement arcade, a bar/restaurant and a 10 pin bowling alley. An existing cinema and outdoor play area are also likely to be upgraded and extended. However, Graham did point out that the project was very much in the planning stage at the moment.

The news comes after four other RHA projects have opened, including the £9.8m Ripley’s Believe it or Not! Museum in the former Trocadero building in London, the £7m Snowdon Summit Building in Wales and work at the Marwell Zoological Park – which includes a £1.1m restaurant and a gibbon enclosure.
