Following an extensive, multi-million dollar renovation, the Statue of Liberty has reopened.

The 151ft statue, situated in New York harbour, has been shut since the twin towers terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

Prior to its closure, the famous attraction had welcomed up to six million tourists each year.

Visitors will now be able to explore the Statue of Liberty museum in the base of the structure and will also be allowed up to the observation deck at the top of the 16-storey (154ft) pedestal.

However, at this time, there are no plans to allow visitors to enter the interior of the statue itself and the statue may never fully open again due to ongoing security concerns.

Beginning on 16 August, visitors to the attraction will be able to log onto www.statuereservations.com for advance ferry tickets to the statue. While those visitors who don’t make reservations can still visit Liberty Island and take park ranger-guided tour or listen to an audio tour, they will not be allowed inside the monument.
