A French Navy officer became the first man to parachute across the Strait of Gibraltar on 10 September, in a bid to promote tourism in Morocco.
Sublieutenant Thierry Demonfort was dropped from a balloon over the Spanish coast and touched down 30km east ofTangiers in northern Morroco.
The event was part of a campaign in partnership with Royal Air Maroc, to boost the tourism industry in Morocco which has not recovered from the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US. Tourism suffered a further downturn in May when a suicide bomber in Casablanca killed 45 people.
