A group including mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, Westminster council, the police, transport and tourist bosses are currently in discussions over plans to stage London’s first official New Year’s Eve celebrations for three years.

If the celebrations are green-lighted by all the relevant organisations, the areas and attractions involved would include Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, Canary Wharf and the London Eye.

Ken Livingstone in particular came in for some intense media criticism last year – despite police support for the decision – after closing Trafalgar Square due to roadworks and subsequent fears that the area could be adequately policed during a New Year’s Eve event. Thousands of revellers were prevented from celebrating in the square in the usual manner.

Although the discussions are still at an initial stage, it is looking hopeful that the New Year may be slightly happier this year in the capital. A spokesperson for Ken Livingstone said: "The Mayor is discussing with various organisations in London a number of different possibilities about how to mark the New Year festivities.
