Oakland Raiders chief eyes Las Vegas move after failed Los Angeles proposal

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis is eyeing a US$1.3bn (£891.2m, €1.1bn) stadium project in Las Vegas after the National Football League (NFL) franchise missed out on a move to Los Angeles earlier this year.

According to reports in the US, Davis will meet the Nevada tourism board today (28 April) to discuss the move to the proposed domed stadium. The project is being put forward in collaboration with casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

The Raiders had bid to relocate to Los Angeles in competition with the San Diego Chargers and the St Louis Rams, however, the Stan Kroenke-owned Rams secured approval from the NFL Board in January.

Subsequently, Davis signed a fresh one year lease deal to keep the Raiders in the team’s Oakland Coliseum home with the option to extend in 2017 and 2018, but the franchise could yet make the move to Los Angeles.

As a consequence of the Rams’ winning bid to build a new stadium in the city, the option was presented to the San Diego Chargers to move with the Rams into the Inglewood-based facility. If the Chargers decline (the franchise has until 15 January 2017 to decide) the Oakland will be offered the same arrangement.
