Savioz Fabrizzi repurposes shipping containers to create grunge music venue
POSTED 16 Sep 2015 . BY Tom Anstey
The makeup of the large steel structures help to prevent vandalism and accidental damage
Swiss-based architecture firm Savioz Fabrizzi have repurposed a number of shipping containers, inserting them into an existing venue in the town of Sion in Switzerland to create a grunge-style music hall.

The two-storey Le Port Franc, which is centred around a 300-seat concert hall, also includes a rehearsal space, dressing rooms and a breakout lounge.

The containers have been converted for multifunctional use, with one being transformed into a bar. By retaining their industrial aesthetic, the containers help to offer an alternative night venue and a cultural hub for the people of Sion.

According to the architects, the standardised dimensions of the shipping units made them easily stackable, while the makeup of the large steel structures help to prevent vandalism and accidental damage. In addition, the modular form of the design means if necessary the scheme can be added to, or subtracted from, allowing flexibility through the entire process. The design also offers security, with certain areas able to be securely closed off simply by closing individual containers.

The project was funded by the Bea Young Artists Foundation – a non-profit organisation which aims to support young artists in different fields of contemporary art. Savioz Fabrizzi were awarded the project after winning an architectural competition in 2011.
