Gareth Hoskins Architects wins Scottish National Gallery redevelopment

The National Galleries of Scotland has announced that Gareth Hoskins Architects (GHA) has been appointed to oversee a major redevelopment project at the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh.

Over the next four years, the Scottish National Gallery (SNG) will undergo a major transformation, led by newly-appointed GHA. The Glasgow-based practice beat several other finalists to seal the overhaul, including LDN Architects, Malcolm Fraser Architects, John McAslan + Partners, MUMA and Page/Park.

Several galleries devoted to the national collection of historic Scottish art will be overhauled and expanded, almost doubling the current exhibition space. Visitor circulation will also be improved, while new facilities will be added to the gallery.

Michael Clarke, director of SNG said: "The gallery has an international significance and this transformational project will allow for the creation of new and innovative displays to inspire our growing number of visitors from all over the world."

Presently welcoming over a million people a year, the redevelopment follows on from the 2004 Playfair Project and the completion of the underground Weston Link, running between the Royal Scottish Academy building and the Scottish National Gallery.

GHA said the practice was "excited at the opportunity of working with the National Galleries to create new spaces for their fantastic collection… and to be part of the ongoing evolution of Edinburgh’s cultural buildings."

GHA has worked with a variety of cultural and leisure institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and more recently, the National Museum of Scotland, which is now undergoing further the final stages of construction.
