Donald Trump buys Irish golf complex after losing Scotland legal battle

Donald Trump has purchased a five-star golf resort on the west coast of Ireland for a reported €15m ($20.6m, £12.4m), thought to be well below the original asking price for the Doonbeg golf and hotel complex which opened in 2002 at the height of the property boom.

News of the billionaire property developer’s purchase broke on the same day that he lost a legal action against a windfarm being built near his golf resort in Aberdeenshire.

Trump has been locked in a long-running battle with the Scottish government over a decision to approve an experimental windfarm in Aberdeen Bay, two miles south east of his planned £750m golf resort.

His first 18-hole course at Menie, Aberdeenshire, opened in 2012 and Trump has planning approval for a major club house and a second course.

The American businessman said he would now focus his attention on developing the Doonbeg golf complex – which features an 18-hole links course designed by Greg Norman, a five-star hotel and spa, 400 acres of land and almost 4km (2.5m) of coastline – while he appealed the Aberdeen decision, the Guardian reported.

Set to be renamed the Trump International Golf Links, Ireland, the County Clare course will be Trump’s 16th golf development venture and is due to undergo significant refurbishment before reopening.
