Cash boost for Scottish mining museum
POSTED 18 Feb 2013 . BY Aoife Dowling
The National Mining Museum Scotland in Dalkeith, Midlothian (NMMS) has secured a £370,000 financial boost in the 2013-14 budget.

The Newtongrange attraction is to receive the grant, which forms part of a £49.7m package allocated to the museums and galleries sector in the Scottish Government's 2013-14 Budget.

Plans for 2013 include creating Scotland's first mining memorial space, and a project to bring cinema back to Newtongrange, which began last month with a screening of the Hobbit.

During 2012, NMMS opened three new facilities including an Interactive Zone, The Energy Lab and The Exhibition Centre.

Culture secretary Fiona Hyslop said the museum is tremendously important and tells the story of our industrial past, as well as exploring ways of meeting our energy needs in future.

"Situated in Europe's best preserved Victorian colliery, the Museum houses a nationally recognised collection that includes tens of thousands of historic items - with everything from machinery and equipment to photographs to locomotives.

"It is vital this collection is preserved for future generations to learn about and enjoy."
