Christoph Grunenberg is to leave Tate Liverpool after ten years as the attraction's director to take up the post of director of Kunsthalle Bremen, Germany.
During his tenure at Tate Liverpool, the attraction welcomed more than one million visitors during the city's successful European Capital of Culture year in 2008.
Grunenberg also chaired the Turner Prize jury four years ago- the first time the exhibition and award ceremony had been held outside London.
Tate director Sir Nicholas Serota said: "[Christoph] has made Tate Liverpool an exciting destination for visitors from the North West region and beyond, and with an average of 600,000 visitors annually, one of the most successful galleries of modern and contemporary art in the world."
