Representatives from York's archaeological and heritage groups have presented the city's bid to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the House of Commons.
Officials from the City of York Council also formed part of the delegation, which delivered the bid to a special briefing of MPs, peers and business and civic leaders.
York is one of 37 UK locations aiming to feature on a tentative list of potential submissions to UNESCO, which will be published next year.
Archaeologist Dr Peter Addyman said: "The fact that York is not a World Heritage Site comes as a major surprise to most people.
"This meeting is to brief MPs and others on the city's archaeological richness, which in our view certainly qualifies York to be a World Heritage Site."
