A new scheme his been launched to offset the carbon emissions caused by air tourism, as well as help fund sustainable community initiatives on the ground.
First Choice Holidays, in partnership with The Travel Foundation and Climate Care, established the World Care Fund to “help offset the carbon from flights, protect the natural environment and support local cultures, traditions and communities”.
First Choice customers will be given the option of making a voluntary contribution (£1.50 per adult, 75p per child), which will fund renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in places such as Zambia, The Gambia, Sri Lanka and Cyprus.
The UK sustainable development charity, Forum for the Future, has welcomed the initiative.
“This is a positive step forward and shows that First Choice is taking sustainability seriously. It is part of a wider carbon strategy that prioritises reducing carbon dioxide emissions above offsetting. We are confident that where they lead, others will follow.” Details: www.firstchoice.co.uk/environment
