York Tourism Partnership is working with more than 600 local taxi drivers to inform tourists about the city’s calendar of arts events, festivals and exhibitions.
The ‘Culture Cabs’ scheme is being launched to coincide with the 100th birthday of WH Auden today (21 Feb), one of York’s most famous residents.
As part of the initiative, cabbie Dionysis Bekatorus will be reciting Auden’s “Night Train” poem to his passengers after receiving training from York Theatre Royal’s David Leonard.
Bekatorus said: “I’m really excited to be part of this project. As taxi drivers, we are often the first port of call for visitors to York, so it’s good that we can give them a taste of what cultural York can offer.”
Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of York Tourism Bureau, part of York Tourism Partnership, added: “Taxi drivers already do a fantastic job in welcoming our visitors, and we thought it was important that they know exactly what’s happening this year so they can tell their passengers about all the exciting cultural activities going on.” Details: www.ymn.net
