The Weymouth & Portland Borough Council management committee has recommended that a conditional building and lease agreement for a £100m redevelopment of Weymouth Pavilion in Weymouth, Dorset, be submitted for full Council approval on 17 May.

Developer Howard Holdings proposes to build a World Heritage Centre linked to World Heritage Coast cruises – the largest eco-tourism cruise operator in Tasmania – a tourist information centre, a new pier and a new ferry terminal at the pavilion.

A 250-berth marina is also planned, subject to a hydrological study to investigate the possible environmental impact on the local area.

In addition, the redeveloped pavilion will feature a 150-bedroom hotel with conference and fitness facilities as well as a new theatre.

Pending full council approval, Howard Holdings is expected to submit a building application for planning permission in early 2007, with work on site starting that October.

The hotel and theatre will be completed in May 2010 and in June 2011, respectively, and the entire redevelopment is anticipated to be completed by September 2011.

Councillor Brain Ellis, chair of the council Management Committee, said: “Weymouth Pavilion will be completed in time to host the sailing events for the 2012 London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.” Details: www.weymouth.gov.uk
