BIG and Heatherwick Studio crowned at World Architecture Festival
POSTED 28 Nov 2018 . BY Andrew Manns
BIG and Heatherwick Studio were among the winners on day one of the World Architecture Festival Awards in Amsterdam.

The Audemars Piguet Hotel des Horlogers – designed by architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), has been named the best building in the Future Projects Leisure Led Development award category at this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF).

The hotel, which is being constructed alongside the BIG-designed Audemars Piguet luxury watch museum in Le Brasuss, Switzerland will feature a zigzagging, ramp-like roof, linking guests to nearby ski trails.

Comprising 50 rooms, the 6,400sq m (68,800sdq ft) resort, which is slated to open in 2019, will also include two restaurants, a bar, and a spa.

Heatherwick Studio won in the New and Old completed buildings category, with the Zeitz Mocaa contemporary art museum, an attraction which has been dubbed 'Africa’s Tate Modern'.

The studio repurposed a former grain silo in Cape Town, South Africa to create Africa’s first international museum dedicated to modern African art.

The Culture award for completed projects went to Conrad Gargett for the Piano Mill in Stanthorpe, Australia, a building and artwork designed to celebrate the musical history of the country’s outback. The copper-clad structure houses 16 old pianos and is set in rural Queensland.

The competition at this year’s awards was steeper than ever, with the programme receiving more than 1,000 entries – a 20 percent increase compared with 2017.
