Holland's Rijksmuseum reopens after makeover
POSTED 30 Apr 2013 . BY Kath Hudson

Holland's Rijksmuseum reopened on 14 April after a 10-year refurbishment. Now 80 galleries and 8000 objects tell 800 years of Dutch history.

The much vaunted facelift has been masterminded by Seville architect, Cruz y Ortiz and the galleries have been designed by French architect, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who worked on the Louvre.

The renovation is a combination of 19th century grandeur with modern design. The original architecture has been fully reconstructed in a number of key spaces.

Spanning four floors, the museum recounts Dutch history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Artists featured include Rembrandt and Frans Hals.

A spectacular entrance hall and an Asian pavilion are among the new additions and many new artefacts are now on show including art, photos, jewellery, fashion and silver.

Over 75,000 electronic tickets have been booked online by members of the public in advance of the official opening ceremony.

The museum was officially opened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in one of her last public appearances before her abdication.
