Rijksmuseum to unveil renovated Philips Wing in November
POSTED 11 Jun 2014 . BY Chris Dodd

Holland’s Rijksmuseum will be fully transformed come November, following the opening of the newly renovated Philips Wing, providing space for national and international exhibitions.

The renovation of the wing follows on from the 10-year overhaul of the Dutch national museum’s main building, which was reopened in April of last year.

The work, conducted by Spanish architecture firm Cruz and Ortiz, has now seen the Philips Wing become home to 13 exhibition galleries – inclusive of a separate gallery to house changing photography exhibitions – along with a new restaurant with its own sun terrace.

The autumn will also see the opening of a new garden surrounding the wing, which will feature a small, 18th-century pavilion and a giant chess set open for use by visitors at set times during the day.

Prior to the renovation of the wing, the main building of the museum underwent a major facelift by the same Sevilla-based architects, with the building’s architecture being fully reconstructed in a number of key spaces.

Among the standout features of the renovation were the museum's entrance hall and a grand Asian pavilion.

To celebrate its opening on 1 November, the Rijksmuseum’s Philips Wing will host the Modern Times, Photography in the 20th Century exhibition, featuring 400 works from the museum’s photography collection.
