Hilton Worldwide to open Florida resort designed by Michael Graves
POSTED 01 Dec 2015 . BY Kim Megson

One of the final buildings designed by renowned architect Michael Graves is set to open as a nautically-themed hotel and beach resort in Florida next year.

Hilton Worldwide has signed an agreement with developer CFLB Partnership LLC to complete Graves’ vision for its first Conrad Hotels & Resorts resort in North America.

Graves – famous for his unique and exuberant brand of postmodernist design – died in March at the age of 80.

His design for the resort, located along the beaches of Fort Lauderdale, pays homage to the winding waterways and boating heritage of the region – known locally as ‘the Venice of America’. Guestroom interiors will be fitted with yacht-inspired porthole windows, crisp, white furnishings and natural elements like chestnut teak and leather.

The design for the 24-storey resort – which has been updated by Florida studio Garcia Stromberg and hospitality design firm Stephen G Interiors – incorporates 290 studio and suite accommodations, four distinct indoor and alfresco dining experiences, a 4,000sq ft (372sq m) ocean view spa and fitness centre and an elevated deck oasis with an ocean-facing pool.

A sweeping porte cochere entrance will feature an abstract sculpture by local architect and artist Peter Stromberg, drawing inspiration from the indigenous shoreline mangrove forests.

The resort’s four unique experiences include a Northern Mediterranean restaurant with
an outdoor terrace facing the Atlantic Ocean; a Prohibition-style bar pouring craft beers and 1920’s-inspired cocktails; a gourmet market; and a tranquil pool bar and lounge.

“Offering an idyllic location, thriving culture and culinary scene and, of course, pristine beaches, this region is one of the most desired destinations for both leisure and business travellers,” said Martin Wormull, general manager of the resort, which is set to open in the first half of 2016.

“The sophistication of Conrad Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort will perfectly complement the luxury experience of this vibrant ‘beach-chic’ city with premium amenities and stylish design.”
