Atlanta Braves new stadium set for 2017
POSTED 04 Jun 2014 . BY Tom Anstey
The stadium is set to replace Atlanta's current home of Turner Field Credit: Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves baseball team has moved a step closer to sealing a move to their future home after Cobb County Commissioners gave unanimous approval for American Builders 2017 to operate as construction manager for the new ballpark, set to open in February 2017.

American Builders 2017 – a joint venture between Brasfield & Gorie, Mortenson Construction, Barton Malow Company and New South Construction – will oversee the build on the new 41,500-capacity US$622m (€456m, £371.5m) stadium, which will include restaurants, retail outlets, residential, office space and a boutique hotel as part of the mixed-use development.

The capacity of the new stadium will hold be around 8,000 less than the Braves’ current home of Turner Field, occupying 15 acres (6.1 hectares) of the 60 acre (24 hectare) development.

The stadium will be constructed in a public/private partnership with a project budget of US$622m (€457m, £372m). Cobb County will contribute US$392m (€287.6m, £234.1m) towards the build, with US$368m (€270, £219.8m) generated through bonds, US$14m (€10.2m, £8.6m) from transportation taxes and US$10m (€7.3m, £5.9m) from businesses in the Cumberland Community Improvement District. The remaining US$230m (€168.7m, £137.4m) will come from the Braves, whose contribution can be increased up to US$280m (€206m, £168m) at the team’s discretion.

Populous has designed the new ballpark, meaning the architectural firm will have worked on 19 of the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums when the Braves' new facility comes into use. Construction is scheduled to start 18 February, 2015 with a completion date of 21 February 2017.
