Plans to safeguard National Media Museum
POSTED 11 Dec 2012 . BY Jessica Tasman-Jones
Visitor numbers have halved at the National Media Museum since 2001
Staff cuts, relocating archives and spending more on exhibitions, galleries and events are among the plans to safeguard the future of Bradford's National Media Museum.

In October it was revealed the West Yorkshire attraction was undertaking a spending review due to a fall in visitor numbers.

Part of the Science Museum Group, its performance came under scrutiny when the annual report for 2011-12 revealed total visitor numbers of 488,378, down from 501,664 in the previous year, and a mere half of 2001 numbers.

Visitor numbers were up across the rest of the group's museums, which are London's Science Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry and the National Railway Museums in York and Shildon.

The annual report stated the museum's IMAX theatre had seen a particularly significant drop in numbers but a museum spokesman confirmed there are no plans to close the cinema.

Despite a lack of visitors the museum retained its position as West Yorkshire's most visited museum and was recognised in Yorkshire's Magnificent Attractions awards, being voted the top indoor attraction.

The review is still ongoing and details about job losses are yet to be revealed though some new roles will also be created under the changes.

Museum archives have been moved from Black Dye Mills to a Science Museum Group-owned store in Swindon in an effort to save cash.
