The Winchester Treasure - a gold jewellery hoard from mid 1st century BC has gone on display at the British Museum after being discovered by a metal detectorist in the autumn of 2000.
All the objects, including two gold necklace torcs, are rare or unparalleled and there have only been two other known finds of gold Iron Age brooches in Britain to date.
The National Art Collections Fund helped the museum secure the gold jewellery hoard with a grant of £90,000. The total cost of the acquisition was £350, with further funding coming from the British Museum Friends and the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
David Barrie, director of the Art Fund said the jewellery was a stunning find: 'How it was discovered and reported and then acquired by the British Museum is a model case study for how the Treasure Act should work.'
