An international team, led by New York-based Steven Holl Architects, has been chosen to design the Mumbai City Museum North Wing.

Steven Holl Architects has been chosen to almost double the size of the Mumbai City Museum, otherwise known as the Bhau Daji Lad Museum, from a shortlist of eight architectural heavy weights.

Organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants, the competition drew more than 100 entrants.

Malcolm Reading commented: “In Steven Holl Architects we have a team ready to meet the challenges of the brief, giving the Museum exciting and memorable spaces, which will allow it to renew its mission, engage with new audiences and sparkle as one of the key cultural destinations in Mumbai.”

The winning design was selected for its ‘sculptural and calligraphic qualities’. The new North Wing is expected to be 8,000 to 10,000sq m (85,000 to 110,000sq ft) in size and provide new galleries and facilities for the Museum. Temporary exhibition space will also be created that reaches international standards.

First opened in 1872 as a sister museum to London’s Victoria & Albert, the original buildings of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum have been lovingly restored. With the new wing, modern facilities such as an archive, conservation areas, a shop and cafe will help to further modernise the Museum.

Construction is expected to start onsite in 2015.

The shortlist of the final eight competitors was as follows:

- Studio Mumbai Architecture (India)+ Edifice Consultants with Sterling Engineering Consultancy Services and Eskayem Consultants

- Zaha Hadid Architects with Sameep Padora Associates, AKT II, Max Fordham, Dan Pearson Studio and AECOM

- Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos (Spain) with Malik Architecture, Arup and Empty

- Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects (US) with Christopher Charles Benninger Architects, Leslie E Robertson Associates International, Buro Happold, WORKSHOP: Ken Smith Landscape Architect and George Sexton Associates

- Steven Holl Architects (US) with Mumbai-based Opolis Architects, Guy Nordenson and Associates, AECOM, Dongre Project Management Consultants, Transsolar and L’Observatoire

- wHY (US) with Ganti + Associates, Sterling Engineering, Sterling and Wilson, Magnusson Klemencic Associates, Buro Happold, Local Projects and Quantsoft India

- OMA + S&K (Netherlands) with Meinhardt India, Houtman + Sander, GMD Consultants and Langdon Seah

- AL_A (UK) with PK Das, Arup, Turner & Townsend, GROSS. MAX and Superflux
